Cosmic Latte

In 2002, two astronomers at Johns Hopkins calculated the average colour of the universe. They measured the light from over 200,000 galaxies — every collision and supernova and slow drift of stellar gas — and averaged it. The result was not black. It was not the cold blue of deep space. It was a warm, creamy off-white. They named it cosmic latte.

I have thought about that a lot. The idea that everything, held all at once, resolves into something that warm.

The background is alcohol ink, not painted so much as released. You set the conditions and then you let the pigment find its own way across the surface. Plum bleeding into rose. Gold surfacing through mauve. Veins of darker colour moving like rivers seen from a long way up.

No two alcohol ink backgrounds are the same, which means no two Cosmic Latte cards are the same. The one you hold was not planned into existence. It arrived. And then the cream mulberry paper flowers were placed at its base, hand-shaped, each one open, sitting against the warmth of the ink like the first light of something.

The holographic border catches that warmth too, shifting as you move the card. It is the same card and a different one depending on where you are standing.

Cosmic latte is a name that holds two things at once the scale of the universe and the smallness of a cup in your hands. That tension is what this card is about.

The feeling that something immense is also, somehow, intimate. That you can hold the weight of a thing and still find it warm.

I wanted this card to feel like that. Not small and sweet, but not cold or distant either. Something that belongs to both registers at once.

Cosmic Latte is a meaningful greeting card for the kind of love that has accumulated over time. Not the sharp feeling of a new thing but the deep, settled warmth of something that has been there long enough to become part of the background.

The person who has been in your life so long that their absence would change the colour of everything.

Give it to someone who has been your constant. Who has been there long enough to be part of your average. Everything, averaged across time, resolves into something warm. Give them proof that they are part of yours.
